There’s a Reason for Every Season at Ingersoll Place

At Ingersoll Place Assisted Living and Memory Care, we are often asked by prospective residents and their family members, “Is there a best time of year for making the move to your community?” Truth is, there are many great reasons why every season is the best time to call Ingersoll Place home.

Spring is in the Air

As springtime nears and March temperatures begin to rise, everyone is looking forward to spending more time outside. Our gardeners-in-residence can’t wait for Ingersoll’s Garden Club sessions to begin. Raised garden beds are wheelchair and walker friendly, making gardening more accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Spring also marks the kick-off of the outdoor Walking Club and afternoon sing-alongs under the entrance canopy. Plans are underway for the annual Petting Zoo and first outdoor picnic of the season.

Providing a one-of-a-kind backdrop to Ingersoll’s outdoor activities is the Reist Wildlife Sanctuary, home to hundreds of species of plants, birds and animals. The preserve is an integral part of daily life for our residents who enjoy the ever-changing views of nature right in their own backyard.

There’s also an abundance of regularly scheduled indoor activities and celebratory events. Spring highlights include St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day – each special event meticulously planned by the Activities and Food Service departments with extensive support from staff members, house-wide. In the Good Old Summertime

Outdoor activities continue throughout the summer and early fall including visits to a local stable where residents are given the opportunity to groom horses and share space with these intelligent, loving animals. Cruising the Hudson River aboard the Dutch Apple and strawberry and apple picking at Bowman Orchards are yearly favorites (as are the pie-making sessions that follow!). Also on residents’ lists of favorite outdoor venues is the Central Park Rose Garden, especially when paired with a stop at a nearby ice cream stand. In recent years, new outdoor events have been added including a Lemonade Stand Fun-Raiser and Antique Car Show. Annual celebrations during the summer season include Father’s Day, Independence Day and in mid-September, Grandparents Day, National Assisted Living Week and yes, even Oktoberfest.

Autumn in New York

A great old tune composed in 1934, Autumn in New York was made popular by Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. It’s no wonder so many people love this time of year. Although Labor Day is often described as the unofficial start to fall, it’s still officially summer until Sept. 23. In most years, the lawns and gardens at Ingersoll Place remain in bloom until the end of September. Residents take full advantage of the mild weather, sitting outside with friends and family, taking walks around Ingersoll’s circular drive or just relaxing in the fresh air and sunshine.

By early October, the woodlands that surround Ingersoll Place are wearing their fall colors and everyone’s attention is turning to Halloween. Thanks to Michelle Rearic, Ingersoll’s Business Office/HR Manager and Christina Benardo, Activities Director, Halloween is always an extravaganza. Spooky costumes, scary decorations and terrifying treats are the order of day for residents and staff, alike. Laughter and camaraderie are contagious, spirits are high and before we shout our last “Boo,” it’s almost Thanksgiving.

In November, with the fireplace burning brightly in the Atrium Lounge, residents gather for the Friendsgiving Fall Ball. Dressed to the nines in party attire, they sample artfully prepared hors d’oeuvres and sparkling beverages while enjoying a live performance by one of their favorite entertainers.

The Sights and Sounds of Winter

By early December, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Ingersoll Place. The mantle is decorated as are Christmas trees in the main lobby and on Lower West. Garlands and festive lights adorn the entrance canopy offering a warm welcome to everyone as they come and go during this busy time of year. It’s a time for parties, afternoon socials, the annual holiday Paint & Sip and cookie decorating events. With a seemingly endless array of activities and special events, Ingersoll Place helps keep the winter blues at bay for our year-round residents and short-term respite guests.

As the countdown to a new year begins, the Super Bowl Game is top-of-mind for many residents along with newly introduced outings to the public library and Sunday afternoon streaming presentations of “The Greatest Orchestral Works.”

February is all about fun, laughter and love at Ingersoll’s Valentine’s Day celebration and again, during the “You Make a Difference” staff recognition day. Outside, a pair of mallard ducks are spotted on Ingersoll’s little pond and a few days later, a small herd of deer on the hillside.

March has come again. Spring is in the air…
